Haven't used the tempered glass yet since the stock pre-applied screen protector is still pristine. Such a waste to remove it. And yes, you do need to remove the old pre-applied protector. Even the stock protector is great if you're careful enough with your device, but if you know you could get clumsy then this is definitely a must have accessory.
